0:00
more than the science behind the product
0:03
I was captured by the
0:05
story and two sons David and Dan came to
0:09
tell us a story about their father and
0:11
how he had
0:13
formulated a a product after suffering
0:17
so much loss and I was as a nurse very
0:20
captivated because I had never heard of
0:22
anything in the natural world helping
0:24
with some of these um mental health
0:28
issues like bipolar and so I was
0:30
immediately struck by this one if it it
0:33
does even half of what it says it does
0:36
is one that is going to be a spotlight
0:38
like I talked about before and then with
0:40
our own family trying it um we just have
0:45
it's been the sealed the deal for us as
0:47
far as how it works in in our life but I
0:50
was also very impressed going all the
0:52
way up to the Supreme Court of Canada
0:54
and fighting to have that supplement in
0:57
my store

2:09
today audre and I are going to be
2:11
discussing her experience of true hope
2:13
products within those stores all right
2:15
audre welcome to the show thank you so
2:17
much for being with us today how are you
2:20
thanks for having me I'm doing well
2:21
thank you awesome well why don't you
2:23
tell us a little bit about your
2:24
backstory within healthc care well I am
2:28
a registered nurse and I've spent most
2:30
of my time uh 30 years over 30 years in
2:33
fact and when they send you that
2:34
certificate as a registered nurse
2:36
nothing makes you feel older but I have
2:38
been a professional Doula and a
2:40
certified child birth educator for the
2:42
last 30
2:44
years um my whole career has been uh set
2:49
up to help women have babies so I've
2:51
always sort of had a natural Bend to me
2:55
granola as uh my other registered nurse
2:58
sister calls me but about 12 go years
3:01
ago I was diagnosed with ptic
3:04
arthritis and I qualified for these
3:06
heavyduty biologic drugs that are out
3:09
there I wanted an alternative I had gone
3:12
to Africa as a nurse I had been there I
3:13
wanted to go again and I didn't want to
3:15
be on these heavy duty drugs so I looked
3:17
into the natural world to help me out
3:19
with my psoriatic arthritis I most
3:22
people go into the store and just buy
3:23
the supplements we ended up buying the
3:25
store but I can say that 10 12 or 12 12
3:30
years over 12 years later I am doing
3:32
very well dealing with it naturally and
3:35
uh not on any drugs I'm very happy to
3:38
hear that great
3:40
work and um so from your backstory in
3:45
healthcare you know you've got a very
3:46
interesting diverse background
3:48
especially when it comes to mothers and
3:51
babies how does that kind of lead into
3:54
your experience when it comes to EMP
3:57
Power Plus and true hope
3:59
well there are a few supplements that I
4:03
that I sell that I say should have
4:05
spotlights on them and uh true hopes EMP
4:09
or Empower is one of them it just helps
4:12
so many people for example if you were
4:15
breastfeeding and suffering with
4:17
postpartum depression a combination of
4:19
EMP power and high EPA fish oil would be
4:23
a great combination to to go on
4:27
wonderful absolutely that's really cool
4:29
and so people coming into your store so
4:31
you've got three four stores in Calgary
4:35
uh we had five dur during Co we closed
4:38
down to a clinic space and our downtown
4:39
space so we're down to three okay
4:41
awesome and you've got um I mean I've
4:44
never been to one of your stores so like
4:46
you know I walk in I've got the idea of
4:48
like you know there's health stores
4:49
you've got like I don't know you've got
4:51
like Whole Foods and you've got like
4:53
smaller um vitamin supplements but also
4:56
like grocery kind of a thing situation
4:58
what is it what's what you kind of focus
5:00
there so we would be a boutique vitamin
5:02
and supplement we don't sell any foods
5:04
we would be a boutique vitamin and
5:06
supplement so when you walk into our
5:07
store everybody that works there has
5:09
extra education behind them so not only
5:11
am I a registered nurse but I'm trying
5:13
to play keep up with my herbalists and
5:15
my nutritionists that also work there
5:17
that have been in the industry for years
5:19
that's really cool and then when you get
5:20
when you're considering a new product to
5:22
put on the Shelf you're obviously really
5:25
making sure that's something that you
5:27
know is of good quality and it's
5:29
something that you're customers want
5:30
absolutely because we're a small we
5:33
physically have a small space um shelf
5:35
space is at a premium so we actually
5:37
have somebody that it is her job to
5:40
research so we don't just research the
5:42
company that the product comes from we
5:44
actually go back and find out where the
5:45
ra ingredients come from where the whole
5:48
supply chain and obviously when it is
5:51
already set up and established then
5:53
bring in new products from that company
5:54
is a little bit easier but we do our due
5:56
diligence because I want to make sure
5:58
that everything that is on my shelf is
6:00
very therapeutic and will help people
6:03
they're not wasting their money we have
6:04
a saying as nurses things are bed pan
6:07
bullets so on an elderly patient a
6:09
calcium that a carbonate for example
6:12
would be a bed pan bullet it goes right
6:13
through them so I don't want people to
6:15
waste their money and I want them to
6:16
have very therapeutic products that's
6:19
really wonderful and most people who
6:21
come to your store are they reoccurring
6:24
customers or do you you know you get a
6:25
lot of like new people come in and
6:27
because I when I first started studying
6:30
supplements and nutrition going into a
6:33
vitamin supplements store can be a
6:35
really overwhelming thing if you if
6:37
you've got no idea what you're looking
6:38
for yeah it sure was for me the first
6:40
time I went in too okay um so yeah
6:43
that's why we do we staff for having
6:46
that conversation with people about
6:48
their health and we have some very loyal
6:50
people that come to our store we're very
6:52
grateful for them um but we do have new
6:55
people coming in all the time and I
6:56
think younger people are coming in and
6:59
wanting to hey even collagen I want to
7:02
start taking care of myself for this or
7:04
I've got some anxiety and I I need some
7:07
help with that so we're seeing younger
7:09
people too taking care of their health I
7:11
think a pandemic will do that that uh
7:14
make people aware to really take care of
7:16
themselves and how's the last 12 months
7:18
been for you guys I mean you've had to
7:19
close a couple of stores but have you
7:21
been able to like follow protocols and
7:24
stay open or offer like different
7:25
services to like pick up drop off
7:28
deliveries yeah we never closed my
7:30
medicine is at my store and I you know
7:33
one one day that we were having problems
7:35
with one of our locations that are in a
7:37
mall and they wanted us to close on a
7:39
Sunday and uh I had a patient who had
7:43
lung cancer and she was coming in for
7:44
all her supplementing um for her regime
7:48
that she takes so her medicine is at my
7:50
store as well and so we we actually went
7:53
all the way up to the Alberta Government
7:54
and found out that we are an essential
7:55
service so we never did close we were
7:57
one of the first to have sneeze guard up
8:00
and and everything and protocols in
8:01
place to protect everybody well
8:03
wonderful that you're able to know you
8:05
quite clearly do your due diligence with
8:06
your products and and keeping up with
8:08
the protocols and yeah it's an absolute
8:10
responsibility to continue to make
8:13
available people's in some cases like
8:18
life-saving supplements and and
8:20
medications that's wonderful why don't
8:22
you tell us a little bit about when you
8:24
were when you were initially introduced
8:26
to True
8:28
hope well well I was introduced to True
8:30
hope very early on um we've owned the
8:33
store now for going on 11 years and I
8:35
remember it was one of the first
8:37
products that I got training on and I
8:42
more than the science behind the product
8:45
I was captured by the
8:47
story and two sons David and Dan came to
8:51
tell us a story about their father and
8:53
how he had
8:55
formulated a a product after suffering
8:58
so much loss and I was as a nurse very
9:02
captivated because I had never heard of
9:04
anything in the natural world helping
9:06
with some of these um mental health
9:09
issues like bipolar and so I was
9:12
immediately struck by this one if it it
9:15
does even half of what it says it does
9:18
is one that is going to be a spotlight
9:19
like I talked about before and then with
9:22
our own family trying it um we just have
9:27
it's been the sealed the deal for us as
9:29
far as how it works in in our life but I
9:32
was also very impressed going all the
9:34
way up to the Supreme Court of Canada
9:36
and fighting to have that supplement in
9:38
my store what I love about this
9:42
industry is that I get to meet
9:43
formulators and teachers and it just
9:46
blows me away and I can tell those
9:48
stories to the customers purchasing it
9:50
I've met these people and and uh this is
9:53
the story behind what they do and why
9:55
they do it yeah and I really love the
9:56
fact that I think is I think as human
10:00
beings and we hear a story let's say the
10:02
story you heard from from David that you
10:05
know this this product and this company
10:07
just like many others is really birthed
10:09
out of something quite unique and
10:11
special and that carries a lot of
10:13
emotion to it and I think as a as a as a
10:16
human being you hear that story coming
10:18
face to face from somebody you know that
10:20
that's genuine you know that's authentic
10:21
and you know that this product and this
10:23
company is being born from something
10:25
really really special and I think that's
10:28
a a real difference between a lot of
10:30
these like Natural Health Products and
10:33
therapies rather than you know some you
10:35
know
10:36
Pharmaceuticals perhaps so yeah you
10:39
mentioned that you've got some
10:41
experience personally using the products
10:42
with your family can you tell us a bit
10:44
more about that yeah so EMP or Empower
10:48
is uh a staple in our family I have two
10:52
daughters that uh first of all my whole
10:54
family are athletes except for their
10:56
mother and uh so you're you're a mother
11:00
that's the champion athlete mother I'm
11:02
the nurse that puts them back together
11:04
when they fall apart um anyways they
11:06
have played high level of hockey and uh
11:08
two of my daughters have suffered
11:10
concussions and my husband has had 22
11:12
documented concussions in his life so
11:16
coming out of that being able to give
11:19
them the EM power to to help them with
11:23
their concussion and I tell my customers
11:25
that if my husband goes off his EMP I
11:28
can tell within three days that he's off
11:30
it and so he's just not allowed to do
11:34
that cuz uh I hear his laundry list too
11:36
many times of things that are causing
11:38
him anxiety what do you what do you
11:40
notice then like if you know if he's not
11:41
been on for a few days so it helps them
11:44
my daughter is a university student it
11:45
helps her with focus with that
11:47
concussion fog that happens it has just
11:50
uh with a with my husband Andrew it just
11:53
helps him cope more day-to-day with his
11:57
NeverEnding laundry list he's one of the
11:58
busiest man man I know he's so
12:01
hardworking um but uh it helps him to
12:04
just decrease his anxiety focus more on
12:06
what he has in front of him and not
12:08
worry about the rest of the laundry list
12:10
wonderful and with your medical
12:12
background how do you how do you explain
12:16
how this you know broads Spectrum
12:17
micronutrient can really support many
12:21
different people I mean you've got this
12:23
kind of pattern of concussions in your
12:25
family and you're seeing that it's
12:27
supporting people in different ways like
12:29
how do you see that working well the way
12:31
I explain it to my customers when I only
12:33
have a couple minutes in front of them
12:35
is that some brains need more nutrients
12:39
than other brains and when your body is
12:41
telling you either through depression
12:43
anxiety that fog you need to focus more
12:46
in school this product reads like a
12:49
multivitamin so you can take it like a
12:51
multivitamin but you know your brain is
12:53
being fed it seems to make sense to them
12:56
it sort of takes the stigma of anxiety
12:58
and depression away to just know that
13:01
some people need the the fact that it
13:04
passes the blood brain barrier and they
13:06
just need more nutrients getting to
13:07
their brain absolutely you know we're
13:09
all so different we've all experienced
13:10
different things you know if you've
13:12
experienced a physical trauma like a
13:14
concussion you know and that's caused
13:15
actual brain injury and then somebody
13:17
who's experienced let's say chronic
13:19
stress and inflammation for many years
13:21
you know that's that's another form of
13:23
of brain injury itself and the the fact
13:27
that this product is again as you safe
13:29
bioavailable and it crosses a blood
13:31
brain barrier and it and it's
13:33
um in its manufacturing it's being being
13:36
processed in a way that it doesn't
13:38
matter how kind of inflamed you are or
13:40
like how well or not well your digestion
13:42
is working you're going to uptake this
13:44
nutrition and your body like it does and
13:46
its brilliant wisdom is going to get it
13:48
to where it needs to go and the fact
13:51
that you know you notice just after a
13:53
few days if your husband's not taking
13:54
his product that those symptoms creep
13:56
back it just shows how
13:59
even after you know you've been taking
14:01
the product for a long period of time
14:02
you still need to be taking that
14:04
consistently you know we talk about the
14:07
fact that our our food system and our
14:08
soil is not quite what it's used to and
14:11
we kind of all really need to be taking
14:12
a base level of micronutrients to really
14:15
support the you know the continuously
14:18
working brain that we all have happening
14:21
for sure and we don't stop eating every
14:24
day just because we ate the day before
14:26
and so our brain needs to be fed on a
14:28
daily basis
14:29
and so I think when people understand
14:31
that this is the food for my brain this
14:34
is what I need to support what I'm going
14:36
through in Life or my own biology
14:40
absolutely what um in the store what
14:42
product is a particular
14:45
favorite well I would say the EMP or the
14:48
EMP power is uh our best seller and uh
14:52
and favorite but we do it uh in
14:54
conjunction with the free aminos and
14:56
also the inositol is a is a good seller
14:58
for us as well
14:59
so when somebody's coming in and is
15:02
there is there a
15:03
typical condition or set of
15:05
circumstances that you may recommend EMP
15:08
Power Plus in in combination with other
15:11
things perhaps yeah I would say the
15:13
start or the entrance level would be the
15:15
Empower plus um or EMP it's changed some
15:19
names so if I go back to calling it EMP
15:21
just what we used to call it yeah we're
15:22
with you okay and uh I think that when
15:26
people come in and say I just need a
15:28
little bit more then we combine it with
15:30
the free aminos or if we're dealing with
15:31
an actual diagnosis then we'll add in
15:33
the inositol if we're dealing with a you
15:37
know a a compulsive disorder or
15:39
something like that wonderful yeah it's
15:40
so wonderful that you're able to you
15:42
know just the fact that your employees
15:44
and you have the knowledge of the
15:46
products and knowledge of um the
15:48
different pathologies that people might
15:50
come in with and you can offer that to
15:51
support to people because people going
15:53
into a vitamin store who may not really
15:55
know what they're looking for they do
15:57
need that extra bit of support and they
15:59
need that that explanation a little bit
16:02
as well like why this product is for
16:05
them and that can be really reassuring
16:07
in regards to like taking it and and you
16:09
know staying on that program right it is
16:12
overwhelming when you walk in and
16:13
there's 2,000 bottles in front of you
16:15
with that said we work with a lot of
16:16
naturopaths and a lot of doctors and so
16:18
when people come in with a prescription
16:20
they've they've had the two-hour history
16:22
taking that doctor so we follow their
16:24
protocol very wonderful that's great so
16:27
you get a lot of um people come in who
16:29
have been recommended to go and get the
16:32
product from your store correct yeah we
16:34
do work with a lot of naturop paaths and
16:36
it is a favorite out there that's for
16:38
sure love that that's wonderful do you
16:40
have any particular outstanding stories
16:43
of clients using Empower plus um I do I
16:47
just actually Friday uh a lady that
16:50
we've been working with for a while um
16:52
who actually initially came in because
16:54
she's had incredibly bad menstral cramps
16:57
to the point where she's deil ated and
17:00
we've worked with her on that came in
17:02
and she's now working full-time and
17:04
going to school full-time and she just
17:06
feels overwhelmed and like brain fog and
17:10
all of that so got her a bottle of the
17:13
EM power and um she came back and she
17:15
goes that I will not give up that was
17:18
amazing it has helped me in school it
17:20
has helped me just be able to juggle
17:22
everything and not feel so
17:24
overwhelmed um I also have a a dear
17:26
friend of mine a concussion again but
17:28
she was hit by a car two days in a row
17:31
and uh her concussion was hold on sorry
17:33
can you repeat that she got hit by a car
17:36
on one day and then another one the next
17:37
day and then her daughter was driving
17:39
her the next day to probably an
17:41
appointment to deal with her first car
17:43
accident and she was hit again oh wow
17:46
okay so that double impact that double
17:49
concussion that brain injury just seems
17:51
to be when our brain is shaken that
17:53
severely that close together when it
17:55
hasn't had time to recover is in my
17:58
experience when the cussion get really
17:59
bad she was so bad she would go into a
18:01
grocery store and get lost and I know
18:03
that sounds funny but she could not find
18:06
her way out of the grocery store or to
18:08
her car and it would cause her complete
18:11
Panic um iemp Power was one of the first
18:14
things I recommended that she go on and
18:16
she stayed on it for I think to this day
18:19
she's still on it and we're probably
18:21
three years into it she's now back at
18:23
work she's able to focus she um was one
18:26
always one of those people like my
18:28
husband that can handle everything for
18:30
everybody and so this was a real hit to
18:33
her not to be able to even find her way
18:36
out of a grocery store and uh the ower
18:40
has just helped her so tremendously get
18:43
her life back wow and yeah being able to
18:46
use EMP power plus this this
18:48
micronutrient product to not not just
18:50
help with the the brain trauma and the
18:52
concussion and you know that physical
18:54
damage itself but as you say like going
18:56
into a grocery store and not knowing
18:58
where you are like the the panic and the
19:00
anxiety and the frustration and the rage
19:02
and all these emotions that just like
19:04
flood um that product being able to
19:07
support that as well at the same time
19:09
that's that's really really that's
19:11
really wonderful um yeah that's that's
19:14
wild I can't believe that that happened
19:17
like car accident day one and another
19:19
one the second day like that's I mean we
19:21
spoken with a couple of serious hockey
19:24
players quite recently on the podcast
19:25
and you know we're talking about
19:27
concussion after conc concussion after
19:29
concussion out on the ice and just the
19:32
the injury on top of injury on top of
19:34
injury you know the body just goes into
19:35
this like constant state of
19:37
inflammation and it's uh yeah it's it's
19:42
such a hard thing I mean I'm a I'm a
19:45
soccer player we don't really have to
19:46
deal with anything like that but this
19:48
you know the hockey is a whole different
19:50
ball game but it's uh really remarkable
19:54
how the brain and the body can recover
19:57
and heal and get people kind of back to
19:59
where they were in um in in a relatively
20:02
short period of time after something so
20:04
traumatic yeah it is amazing our body's
20:07
ability to heal one of my daughters it
20:10
was a a soccer injury though or would
20:13
you say football injury I would say
20:15
football but I've been here for a few
20:16
I've been here for a few years now so
20:18
yeah it was at school and uh she got
20:21
knocked out teacher got her up dusted
20:23
her off and got her to keep playing so
20:25
it seems these double uh concussions
20:27
seem to be the worst but it is amazing
20:29
how if when we feed our body the right
20:31
nutrients how it can heal yeah and
20:33
hopefully we can um you know try and get
20:35
this product
20:37
into the hands of you know more people
20:40
who are experiencing this because yeah
20:41
you know quite competitive Sports happen
20:44
from a very very young age even when
20:45
brains are developing so yeah it's a
20:48
really important message so you've got a
20:50
very interesting background as a child
20:52
birth educator professional Dueler and
20:54
breastfeeding expert have you ever
20:56
recommended Empower Plus for postpartum
20:59
yeah I one of uh the issues in
21:02
postpartum is postpartum depression and
21:05
uh when you are breastfeeding you
21:07
certainly don't want to put uh a mom
21:09
suffering from depression on the drugs
21:11
that would pass um into the baby and so
21:14
a really good combination would be the
21:16
EMP power plus plus a high EPA fish oil
21:20
there's some good studies on the high
21:21
EPA fish oil um to combat postpartum
21:25
depression so it's a really good
21:26
combination and you've seen some good SU
21:28
uccess with that good success wonderful
21:30
that's really great to hear um do you
21:33
have any particular favorite Health like
21:35
resources any like websites that you
21:37
like to check out any like podcasts that
21:39
you like so I think it's really
21:40
important that um you know I I like to
21:43
know what people who I follow are
21:45
listening to so I can kind of like get
21:46
to know that and there's almost too much
21:48
information out there to be able to
21:49
filter it to get the real like the real
21:51
good stuff do you have any places that
21:53
you you could Rec recommend us to go and
21:55
check out besides my amazing staff when
21:57
I go to them I work with them and
21:59
they're still helping me with all these
22:01
herbs and um and I I really missed the
22:04
trade show this year I love being able
22:07
to have that education day with all of
22:11
the formulators and I love to be able to
22:13
go from Booth to Booth to talk to I get
22:15
my specific questions answered but as
22:18
far as now what uh what I deal with I I
22:21
mean I I miss that I I I'm always blown
22:24
away that these formulators will come to
22:26
my little bitty store and talk to me and
22:30
and uh so I love that personal
22:31
connection I'm missing it a little bit
22:33
this last year uh but I do love that I
22:35
just did a a webinar yesterday for one
22:38
of the products so companies are still
22:40
doing a lot of webinars and uh so a lot
22:42
of resource that way wonderful and um I
22:46
would just love to know like what do you
22:47
love most about your job and working at
22:50
Health at the Vitamin
22:52
Shop good question I
22:56
love the the same reason that I am a
22:59
registered nurse to help people to be
23:01
there to um be trusted to speak into
23:05
their lives is really important and so
23:07
that is fulfilled at that level um at a
23:10
store level as well that I am trusted to
23:14
hear people's stories and try and the
23:17
scientist in me likes that detective
23:19
work is what's going on in your body
23:21
what that can we figure that out but
23:23
just really I love and I'm very
23:25
fulfilled when people come back and say
23:27
nailed it that's exactly what I needed
23:29
that has helped me that has changed my
23:31
life and so that is extremely fulfilling
23:34
for me wonderful I'd love to ask about
23:36
just to kind of finish up your training
23:39
you know your your conventional training
23:40
is as a as a registered nurse and then
23:43
you'll kind of Step into the natural
23:45
world what's been are there any
23:47
significant differences between the the
23:49
two the two um lines of Education that
23:54
you've already noticed there's
23:55
absolutely different lines I often say I
23:59
had to expand my toolbook
24:02
toolbox I did my training I had a
24:05
toolbox in Western medicine but there
24:07
were so many things that there weren't
24:08
answers for and all we ended up doing is
24:11
putting people on more drugs and more
24:12
drugs and we were chasing symptoms and
24:15
we were putting Band-Aids on things and
24:17
so what I love about the natural world
24:19
is I've expanded my toolbox and my tools
24:22
that I can go to but also we get to take
24:24
a step back is that really adrenal
24:26
fatigue that sleep issue
24:28
is that anxiety just your brain not
24:30
being fed in the right way and so we're
24:33
not always chasing symptoms in this
24:35
world we can actually take a step back
24:37
and heal and I love that that's cool and
24:40
I think yeah it's so important that
24:41
you've got both both sets of Education
24:45
because they both obviously complement
24:47
each other and you can see gaps in each
24:49
one and you've got this clear motivation
24:52
and clear drive and clear energy that
24:54
you you know you want to obviously
24:57
further your own education but really
24:59
like get to the root of what people are
25:02
coming in for that need support in your
25:04
store absolutely wonderful well how can
25:08
people connect with you well you can if
25:11
